Today is summer solstice - the longest day - and for some reason that pagan ritual has always resonated as more earthy to feast and drink to than Christmas.
When you’re an orphan, have no children, don’t believe in God, hate rampant consumerism, and are as downright curmudgeonly as I am then, of course, Christmas isn’t going to be anything other than something to be avoided like the plague.
No sending of cards, no last minute shopping for presents, and no long hours in the kitchen preparing food to feed an army. Bliss.
My partner and I do have one Xmas tradition though. That is if anybody kindly asks us along to their family Xmas - feeling sorry for the poor lonely lezzers - we just say we’re Jewish, and “Happy Hanukkah”!
When the day arrives we sleep in, make juicy egg sandwiches and a flask of tea, and sometimes kayak somewhere. Or, if the weather’s bad (as it so often is), just picnic in a sheltered spot in the back garden and watch the birds.
Despite our tradition of completely opting out, we do wish you and yours a festive day on December 25th. So looking forward to those egg sandwiches. You can see it on my face.
Haha - I have spent Christmas Day on my own, too, on occasions. I can't be bothered going to other people's family Christmases, because ...... you know, good behaviour and all that. With my own family anything goes, even though I'm hardly what you'd call a riot :-) As a single, child-free woman, I have to be careful not to let anyone know that I'll be on my own on Christmas Day, if it happens that way, otherwise they'll either feel obligated to invite me to theirs out of pity, or pity the hell out of me when they find out I spent Christmas Day on my own. I guess that makes me curmudgeonly, too. What I have really enjoyed about getting older, is the freedom to be whatever I want to be, as well as the delicious feeling of disapproval rolling right off me :-)
Longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere! :) Also Your Christmas Day sounds awesomely relaxing. Not sure about the cups of tea though. Give me a glass of bubbles with those egg sandwiches. Your dreidel is in the post.
